FAUCHON, the Parisian gourmet house, opened its first hotel to carry its own name outside of its own home city — and chose, for that honor, a stretch of Shimogyo-ku along Kyoto's Kamo River. Ten storeys, 59 rooms in total. Under the concept "FAUCHON Meets Kyoto. Feel Paris.," Yasuhiro Koichi of Design Studio Spin took charge of the overall design. Fauchon pink, white, black, and gold — the brand's signature palette — are paired against Kyoto's own traditional crafts: Nishijin textile weaving, bamboo, washi paper. Two aesthetics, Parisian and Kyoto, are placed in deliberate contrast rather than blended into compromise.
Past the entrance, a stained-glass window in full cherry-blossom bloom greets each guest. The grand staircase leading to the tea salon is shaped as a phoenix with wings outstretched, flowers spilling from its plumage — Western ironwork curves for the wings, traditional Japanese motifs for the flowers. It is this single staircase, step by step, that most concentrates the hotel's entire concept. The lobby sofas hold a distinctly Parisian silhouette, yet are upholstered in Nishijin-ori. The bedside lighting curves in a shape recalling Paris's own mille-feuille pastry.
Each guest room holds a "gourmet bar" filled with FAUCHON confections, free to enjoy throughout the stay. In the top-floor restaurant, recipes carried directly from Paris meet ingredients drawn from Kyoto on the very same plate. With the Kamo River and Gojo Bridge below, the memory of Paris and the rhythm of Kyoto's seasons meet anew, in a slightly different distance, each night.
We chose FAUCHON Hotel Kyoto because it refuses to retreat into the convenient phrase "East-meets-West fusion." Placing Paris's brand colours and Kyoto's traditional crafts in the same space, deliberately unresolved into a single blended style, is precisely this hotel's honesty. Rather than compromise the two into sameness, it lets them stand side by side and still be beautiful.
The general manager has spoken of the parallels between Kyoto and Paris — the Kamo River and the Seine, shrines and cathedrals — and this is no marketing conceit, but a genuine respect held equally for both cities' aesthetics. It is precisely for this reason that LUMIÈRE selects the experience of tasting Parisian gastronomy in Kyoto not as an imported brand, but as an authentic cultural dialogue.
